SHARK BAY

A licensed carrier grade microwave link from Shark Bay to the mine site

The Shark Bay salt field was built in the mid-1960s and began shipment of salt in 1967.

Located in the middle of the Shark Bay World Heritage Property encompassing about 130 square kilometres, of which 70 square kilometres are operational ponds, and is close to the south end of Shark Bay. The sea water salinity here is about 50% more than the open sea. The salt field was built by enclosing natural inlets. Seawater is fed into the first evaporation pond in the Useless Inlet area which contains about 64 square kilometres of operational ponds (evaporators) using the movement of the tides.

Project Summary

Shark Bay Resources requested Air Communications to submit a proposal for the installation of a licensed carrier grade microwave link from the Shark Bay main land to the mine site.

With approval from the Shark Bay council, the microwave link (repeated via the Shark Bay shire broadcast mast) will connect a Telstra provided internet / Business IP service to Wireless Hill at the Useless Loop mine site. A New 20M monopole will be built at Wireless Hill to cater for the Microwave while also being engineered to cater for growth in broadcast and voice mobile radio systems.

This microwave link will operate to 99.995% carrier standards with all equipment being rated and installed for wind region D. As such, the Microwave link will operate a 1+1 (main / standby) to ensure a fully robust and reliable network.

Bandwidth over the link will be certified to 300Mbps (99.995%) aggregate speed with the ability to auto modulate to 600Mbps aggregate speed subject to local conditions.

Basic break down per site as follows:

Shark Bay Visitor Centre

  • Install a wall Mount pole to the rear of the visitor Centre Building (near the rear main roller door)

  • Install 1 x 300mm microwave dish with Outdoor unit (ODU) 21GHz Radio

  • Cable from radio to the internal comms rack (location of Telstra Fibre termination)

  • Install IDU and link to Telstra Customer Premises Equipment

Shire Depot Mast

  • Install 1 x 1.8 Microwave Dish and ODU at 26M Above Ground Limit (AGL)

  • Install 1 x 1.2 Microwave Dish and ODU at 20M Above Ground Limit (AGL)

  • Install 1 x 0.3M Microwave Dish and ODU at 15M Above Ground Limit (AGL)

  • Run feeder from each ODU into the IDU (modem) located in the Council equipment room

  • Install grounding (feeders and radio)Wireless Hill Mono Pole (Site to install foundation works)

Wireless Hill Mono Pole

  • Assemble and Lift 20M Monopole

  • Install 2 x Collar mounts (20M and 10M)
